Pearl Grading Workshop

Pearls have a timeless and universal appeal however the pearl industry has changed dramatically in the last 40 years with the introduction of many new varieties of cultured pearls. Knowing how to distinguish the different varieties and grade pearls based on the appropriate quality and value criteria is essential for jewellers, gemmologists, appraisers, and pearl aficionados.

Starting with an overview of pearl history and production then focusing on hands-on exercises, this two-day workshop follows the pearl from nucleation to necklace.

Whether you are a beginner or a professional, this course will appeal to everyone with an interest in pearls.
There are no prerequisites for this workshop.

What You’ll Learn

During this two-day practical workshop students learn how to recognize different pearl varieties and what factors contribute to the quality and value of each variety. Students work with loose pearls, strands, and pearl jewellery learning how to grade pearls based on shape, size, colour, surface quality, and matching. This course also addresses how to identify common pearl imitations and detect pearl treatments.

What You’ll Receive

Students receive an EGM pearl grading manual designed to help them retain what they see in class and serve as a valuable reference for the future.
Students who successfully complete the class and pass the practical exam will receive a letter of completion from EGM.


This workshop is offered in either English or French and is held over a two-day period 9am to 5pm each day.

At the end of the workshop, and if you have passed the evaluation test, you will receive a certificate from the EGM.

In addition, if you have taken Gemmology 1, 2, 3 and 4 courses and the Facetted Diamond Grading workshop, and if you pass the tests, you will obtain the EGM Certificate in Gemmology.
