The Diamond Course, developed by the WGF (World Gem Foundation), is dedicated exclusively to the world of diamonds.

By the end of this course, students will have a thorough understanding of the chemical nature of diamonds, how they are formed, graded (colourless and coloured), extracted, processed and cut, the unique properties that allow them to be separated from other colourless gems, and how they are graded.

The topics covered in this course are: physical properties, geology, localities, major mines, crystal system, chemical composition and classification, fancy colours, causes of colour, absorption spectra, inclusions, fluorescence, mining, gem identification, methods of synthesis, common treatments and improvements.

The diamond grading course is most comprehensive. Indeed, you will learn all about the 4 C’s of diamond (colour, clarity, cut and carat weight) and how they are measured and evaluated. We will also compare the different ‘cut’ criteria of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), American Gem Society (AGS), Hoge Raad Diamond (HRD), International Gemological Institute (IGI), European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) and Accredited Gem Appraisers (AGA) and explain how the estimated weight of a ‘mounted’ stone is calculated.

Is this program for me?

This course is aimed at diamond lovers with a solid knowledge of gemmology, students wishing to become gemmologists or diamonds professionals.

Professional gemmologists can also upgrade their knowledge thanks to the in-depth approach to diamond grading offered by this course.

How does it work?

This course is available through distance education, with two options:

  • 100% digital
  • Printed material with access to the digital content.

Whatever formula you choose, you will be given an access code that will allow you to access the digital version of the course for life, updated every two years, free of charge.

2 hours of individual tutoring, given by an EGM instructor, are also included in this course. You schedule those tutoring sessions, with online or on-site options, depending on your availability and progress.

In order to help students who choose distance education for their gemmology studies, we offer several gemmology kits ; some that include the instruments required to study gemmology and become a professional; a gem set, made of 30 gemstones carefully selected for their educational value, to help you identify gemstones, treatments and lab-grown gems from the comfort of your home. All gems are labelled and your EGM instructor will help you by explaining what to look for in those specific gems, how to identify them, how to name and draw what you saw and how to handle them with tweezers and other instruments.
