Continue to discover new gems and learn how to accurately identify them with instruments and testing methods used by gemmologists. Building on the course material seen in Gemmology 1 students learn systematic testing and observation techniques used by professionals.

Who Should Take This Course

Jewellery professionals and gem lovers alike will benefit from an understanding of gem testing techniques that allow them to identify gems with accuracy and confidence.
Prerequisites: Gemmology 1.

What You’ll Learn

In one of EGM’s well-equipped laboratory classrooms students learn to use standard gemmological instruments including the microscope, polariscope, refractometer, and spectroscope to accurately identify gems based on their physical and optical properties.
At the end of the course students will be able to follow a logical progression of observation and testing to uncover the identity of almost any gem.

What You’ll Receive

All students will receive detailed course notes filled with information and illustrations that will serve as a valuable future reference. Students who successfully complete the course and pass the final test will receive an attestation from EGM.

Languages and Schedule

This course is offered in English (on Tuesday) and French (on Wednesday). Classes are from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. one evening a week for fifteen weeks. See course calendar for dates.

Certificate Program

For those who want to further pursue their gemmological training, EGM offers a Certificate program. Students who complete Gemmology 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as the Diamond Grading  and Pearl Grading Workshops can sit the EGM Certificate exams. Students who successfully pass the Certificate theory and practical exams will receive an EGM Certificate in Gemmology.
