Who should take this course

This program is done for everyone: beginners, amateurs and professionals who want to explore the fascinating world of diamonds, students wishing to become Career Gemmologists or Diamond Professionals.

There are no prerequisites for this program, but a basic knowledge of gemmology would be better in order to get the most out of this training.

Course format and update

The Diamond Professional program consists in the Diamonds theoretical course and the Diamonds grading / Lab-created Diamonds practical workshop.

The theoretical course is available:

  • Online, in digital version
  • Online, in printed version
  • On-site at the EGM (theoretical courses on-site are given only in French at that moment)

Because this is the philosophy of the WGF, you benefit from exceptional advantages:

  • Whatever formula you choose, the theoretical courses are always given in their digital version
  • The photos of gems available on these courses are rewarded for their high quality
  • Access to these courses in digital version is acquired for life
  • An update is made every two years. Each student receives this update for life and free of charge via his access to the digital courses, and thus remains up to date with the latest developments in the world of gemmology
  • The online courses are accompanied by individual tutoring (you will receive 2 hours of tutoring for this training).

The Diamonds grading / Lab-created Diamonds practical workshop lasts 8 full days and focuses on diamond grading and the identification of lab-created diamonds.

Language and schedules

The course is presented in English.

It is also available in French. If you want to register in this language, please go to the French page of the course: Diamants.

If you wish to take this course in Spanish (online version only), please contact us at info@egmtl.com. We do not give practical workshops in Spanish.

As the theoretical course is given online, you will start and complete your course at your own pace.

If you want to optimize access to the workshop… On-site (and in French), the Diamonds theoretical course is given over 6 days. This training is particularly intensive. Also, at home, we advise you to take more time to study in order to validate your exam and thus be able to follow the practical workshop whose dates can be found by clicking HERE. It takes place from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 12pm and from 1pm to 5pm, according to the announced schedule.

Certificate program

The program includes two online tests, a final practical diamond exam (requiring the preparation of complete lab reports for four diamonds), a 100 multiple-choice question theory exam, and a five-question essay exam at the end of the course.

The theory exams can be taken online, and in real conditions, as if you were a gemmologist: a gemmologist can refer to a book if in doubt. It will be the same process during the exam. What counts in the WGF exams is the relevance and accuracy of the answers given. We prepare you for this throughout the training.

This is not the case for exams that require essay answers. No reference material is permitted. This exam requires supervision. We strongly recommend that you take this exam at the EGM to make it as easy as possible for you. You also have the option of taking this exam at another academy, or under the supervision of a professional gemmologist to whom we will refer you (you will need to charge $20 per exam hour).

Upon completion of this program, graduates will receive the Diamond Professional Diploma.

This training is part of the Career Gemmologist Diploma Program: therefore, students who hold (already or later) the Coloured Gemstones Professional Diploma will also receive the Career Gemmologist Diploma, without having to take an additional exam since all the requirements have been met.

You will find all the information you need about the WGF courses and the different procedures on the Gem Academy of Canada page.
