Gem Treatment Workshop

Prerequisites : Gemmology 4 (or equivalent work experience)

The gem and jewellery business has seen the number of gem treatments multiply at an alarming rate. Gemmologists, appraisers and jewellers must stay informed about treatment detection in order to protect themselves, and their clients, from potentially costly mistakes.

This one-day workshop focuses on teaching students to recognize the most commonly encountered gem treatments and understand what impact these treatments can have on both the value and the durability of the stone.

Treatments viewed in this workshop include : oil/resin filling, heat treatment, heat and diffusion, lead glass filling and coating. A well-chosen selection of treated and untreated stones allows students to compare the two and to learn how to identify treated gems using inclusions, surface features, and other indicators.

Not all treatments are easily detected using observations and standard equipment. Gemmologists, jewellers and appraisers should know when it is time to consult one of the big gem-labs.  Students in this workshop will learn about advanced detection methods employed by large laboratories, what they can detect using advanced equipment and when it is necessary to use their services.
