Rough Diamond Grading Diploma
Rough diamonds are prized not only for their inner potential but more and more frequently the jewellery industry is choosing to showcase their unique beauty in their natural rough state. Since 1998 Canada has become a major player in the global diamond market. We are currently ranked third in the world for diamond production. Here and elsewhere there is a growing need for trained individuals capable of identifying, grading and valuing rough diamonds.
Few institutions offer courses and training in rough diamond grading. At the Montreal School of Gemmology (EGM) students can do full or partial course work leading towards a diploma in rough diamond grading.
To obtain the EGM rough diamond grading diploma students must complete, in order, the following three courses :
1. Facetted diamond grading workshop (2 days)
2. Introduction to rough diamond grading (1 day)
3. Rough diamond grading course (1 week)
Five-day rough diamond grading course
Daily from 9:00 - 5:00 for one week, students will be immersed in the world of rough diamonds. Manipulating and examining well-chosen specimens students will learn :
The principal instructor for this course holds an MSc. in earth sciences from the University of St. Petersburg and has worked with many mining companies analyzing and grading rough diamonds.
On the final day of this course EGM invites professionals from the rough diamond field to share their experience and knowledge with our students. In the past such guest speakers have included: customs agents specializing in the Kimberly Process, the director of a diamond cutting factory, prospectors and diamond dealers.
An EGM Rough Diamond Grading Diploma will be awarded to students who complete the Facetted Diamond Grading Workshop, the Introduction to Rough Diamond Grading Workshop, and the Rough Diamond Grading Course.*
* A passing grade of 75% is required for this course.

- How to classify rough diamonds according to their shapes
- To recognize diamonds from primary and secondary deposits
- How to determine the characteristics of rough diamonds
- How to grade the colour
- How to grade the clarity
- How to measure rough based on crystallographic characteristics
- How to 'mark' the stone foreventual cutting
and polishing - How to estimate the potential yield
of rough diamonds - How to calculate the value
of rough diamonds - The basic principles of the rough diamond market including an overview of the rules and regulations of the Kimberly Process
