COURSES LEADING TO A GEMMOLOGIST DIPLOMA

Since 1997, EGM has been offering a special course to allow students to sit the Canadian and British gemmological associations exams. To date, the success rate has been more than 80%.

In both cases, exams are held in January and in June. It is possible to take this special course on an individual basis under the supervision of a tutor or in a small group, or by correspondance.


Become a FGA gemmologist
Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (GAGTL)

Prerequisites:
EGM Gemmology 1 and 2

Intensive course:
None

The Gemmological Association and Gem Trade Lab of Great Britain (GAGTL) offers courses in London or allow accredited institutions Allied teaching centres (ATL) to prepare students for the FGA examinations. EGM has been an ATL since 1998.

The GAGTL foundation examination consists of two theory papers of three hours each. The passing grade is 66% with practical tests with the loupe only.

The diploma examination consists of two theory papers of three hours each, plus a practical paper of three and a half hours. The passing grade for the diploma is 60% for the theory and 67% for the practical (however, the passing mark for identifying 10 stones is 60%).

BECOME A FCGmA GEMMOLOGIST
Fellow of the Canadian Gemmological Association


Prerequisites: EGM Gemmology 1 and 2

The Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) offers day and evening courses in Toronto or by correspondance. However, anyone can sit their examinations.

The program is divided into two parts: preliminary and diploma.

The preliminary examination consists of two theory papers of three hours each. The passing grade is 67%.

The diploma examination consists of two theory papers of three hours each, plus a practical paper of three and a half hours. The passing grade for the theory and the practical is 67%.

Students who pass both examinations receive the title of Fellow of the Canadian Gemmological Association (FCGmA).

BECOME A GG
Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)

GIA courses can be taken on campus or by correspondance.  The GG program is divided into two parts:  Diamonds and coloured stones.

For those who take the correspondance course, the diamond course is divided into three sections:  two theory and one practical Diamonds, Diamond Grading, Diamond Grading extension class (practical); the coloured stone component is divided into five sections:  three theory and two practical course: Coloured stone, Coloured stone identification, Coloured stone grading, Coloured stone identification extension class, and Coloured stone grading extension class (practical).

Student who are registered with the home study program have to travel to the various cities where the extenstion classes are offered.  Since 1996, EGM has organized GIA extension classes to be held in Montréal.

The next one on diamond grading will take place in July.

EGM offers laboratory support for GIA home study students and invigilates the various exams.
